Back Light

A light placed behind the display to make it readable in poor lighting conditions.

Bitrate

The number of kilobits per second of data in your audio file. It determines the size and quality of the resulting MP3. The standard bitrate for MP3s is 128 kbps. The highest bitrate is 320kbps.

Direct Encoder

Capacity for a player to record music directly from any music player (cd player, radio, K7 player etc...) without using a computer.

DivX

DivX is a video technology that compresses digital video so it can be downloaded over DSL or cable modems in a relatively short time with no reduced visual quality.

Driver

Program that lets peripheral devices (like mp3 players) communicate with computers. Some players require the user to install the corresponding drivers and some are "plug&play".

Encoding

The process of converting a WAV to MP3 audio format. This reduces file size while maintaining sound quality.

EQ (Equalisation)

A filter for audio that increases or decreases volume at certain frequencies, so that treble, bass, or midrange sounds can be amplified or quieted. Most audio devices and playback software contain some EQ options.

External Memory

Additional memory that you can add to some players by using a memory card to increase your player's memory capacity.

Firmware

The operating system and software installed on a portable device. Some MP3 players have upgradable firmware, meaning that their operating systems can be updated to support future audio codecs or make small performance tweaks such as improved power efficie

Flash Memory

Small, flat, solid-state type of memory used in MP3 players, digital cameras, and PDAs. It comprises CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, pendrive, and microdrive.

HDD or HD

Hard Disk Drive or Hard Disk. High capacity and high velocity mass storage device.

ID3

A tagging system that allows you to put music information such as artist, song title, album title, lyrics within your audio files.

MP3

MP3 is the file extension for MPEG, audio layer 3: an audio file compression technique. Because MP3 files are small, they can easily be transferred across the Internet.

MP4

MP4 is a video format but is also used to mean that a player can read video

OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode)

OLED is a display technology that consists of small dots of organic polymer that emit light when charged with electricity. Compared to color LCDs, color OLED displays are brighter, have better viewing angles and use less power.

Plug & Play

Refers to the ability of a computer system to automatically configure expansion boards and other devices. You should be able to plug in your MP3 player and play with it, without worrying about installing any software.

S/N (Signal to noise ratio)

measure of the strength of the audio signal in comparison to that of the background noise. Essentially, a low signal-to-noise ratio means that the device or file has lots of hiss and static, while a high rating means clear-sounding audio.

TOUCH CREEN

Touchscreens are displays which have the ability to detect the location of touches within the display area. it can replace keyboard

USB (Universal Serial Bus)

External bus standard that supports data transfer rates of 12 Mbps. A single USB port can be used to connect up to 127 peripheral devices, such as mice, modems, and keyboards. USB also supports Plug-and-Play installation and hot plugging.

USB 2.0

Also referred to as Hi-Speed USB, USB 2.0 is an external bus that supports data rates up to 480Mbps. USB 2.0 is an extension of USB 1.1. USB 2.0 is fully compatible with USB 1.1 and uses the same cables and connectors.

USB key

Small, portable mp3 player that plugs into a computer’s USB port and functions as a portable hard drive with up to 2GB of storage capacity.

USB Mass Storage

Mass storage is distinct from memory, which refers to temporary storage areas within the computer. Unlike main memory, mass storage devices retain data even when the computer is turned off.

WAV

The format for storing sound in files developped jointly by Microsoft and IBM. WAV sound files end with a ".wav" extension.

WMA

Windows Media Audio, a Microsoft file format for encoding digital audio files similar to MP3 though can compress files at a higher rate than MP3. WMA files, use the “.wma” file extension.
